London Slip
Portsmouth VA 23704
757-393-8741
Description:
DOWNTOWN. Built in 1915, this retired lightship is a National Historic Landmark and now serves as a most enlightening maritime museum. The "Portsmouth" was launched in 1916, underwent an overhaul in 1924, and was re-commissioned two years later. Following years of use and collision damage, the vessel was retired in 1964 exactly 48 years after her launch and was donated to the City in 1967. Extensive repair and renovation has restored much of the ship's former glory.
