OLDE TOWNE. This museum is entertaining for all ages, but it is primarily devoted to educating children about the arts and sciences. Spectacular interactive exhibits include paleontology, dental hygiene, nutrition, art, music, communications technology, sculpture, and dimension. Children will love climbing aboard the kid-sized submarine, lobster boat, trolley, and space shuttle; there's also a great hands-on section for toddlers.

Among the nation's premier art museums, this phenomenal facility is comprised of three historic homes and 30,000 original pieces showcased in 55 galleries, with work ranging from Rembrandt to Lichtenstein. Particularly moving is Cavallino's "Procession to Calvary," a 1645 oil painting depicting Christ carrying the cross on His way to fulfill the redemptive plan of God. The US Navy operates this museum that chronicles 220 years of naval history in the Hampton Roads region, which is the Navy's most important port. This 1908 English Tudor style home, set on a twelve-acre estate along the Lafayette River, is home to an eclectic collection of Western and Asian art. Numerous cultures are represented, with some pieces dating from 2000 BC. Works include English and European paintings and ceramics, Chinese bronzes and ceramics, Persian rugs, French and Italian textiles, and ivory carvings.

DOWNTOWN. Built in 1915, this retired lightship is a National Historic Landmark and now serves as a most enlightening maritime museum. The "Portsmouth" was launched in 1916, underwent an overhaul in 1924, and was re-commissioned two years later. Following years of use and collision damage, the vessel was retired in 1964 ­ exactly 48 years after her launch ­ and was donated to the City in 1967. Extensive repair and renovation has restored much of the ship's former glory.
